My grandfather's 1973 pocket notebook of work shortcuts showed up in a box from Cleveland and I can't stop reading it
My mom mailed me a box of my grandfather's stuff last week and tucked inside was this little green notebook he carried at the steel plant in Cleveland. He wrote down his own little tricks for the job, like which wrench to grab when the fitting was stuck and how to check a gauge without walking back to the office. There are 47 entries in the thing and half of them are just one line, like 'tap twice, read once' and 'swap the gloves before the burn, not after.' I've been doing maintenance work for 11 years and some of his notes are things nobody ever showed me. The page I keep going back to says 'the machine tells you before it quits, you just have to stand still and listen.' It sounds hokey but I caught a bearing going bad on our press last Thursday because of it. Any of you keep a little notebook of your own shortcuts, or am I the last guy doing it on paper?
