I used to think a morning walk was just exercise, but it's not even close to the same as a morning drive
For years, I'd get in my car at 7 AM, grab coffee, and just drive around my neighborhood for 20 minutes to 'wake up.' I thought seeing the houses and streets from behind the wheel was enough. Then my car was in the shop for a week in April, and I had to walk the same route. The difference is huge. From the car, you just see lawns and mailboxes. On foot, you hear the neighbor's sprinkler hitting the fence, you smell the damp earth from a garden someone just watered, and you actually make eye contact with the guy who always gets his paper at the same time. That 20 minute walk lets my brain sort through the day ahead in a way staring at a dashboard never did. The drive was just a task; the walk is part of my day. Has anyone else swapped a routine like this and been shocked by how much more you notice?

I read an article once that called this "windshield reality," how moving fast in a car flattens everything into just visuals. You're right about the sounds and smells. Walking turns the neighborhood from a picture into a place you're actually in. It's a totally different kind of quiet that lets your thoughts settle.
