I was sure my grandma's pie crust recipe was untouchable, then I read 1 number in a 1978 Betty Crocker book
The crust calls for 1/3 cup of water, and every pro I follow online swears it should be ice cold vodka instead, so I tried both on a Saturday and the plain water one flaked better. Anyone else got a grandma recipe that beat out the fancy internet version, or am I just set in my ways?
Trying both on a Saturday is already more effort than most people put into a pie crust. It's just flour and fat and water at the end of the day, so the water one winning doesn't shock me at all. Vodka might make a flakier crust for some folks but half the time people repeat that tip without ever testing it themselves. Grandma recipes stuck around for decades because they worked, not because they were fancy. You're not set in your ways, you just did the work and got an answer.
