I finally checked my oven temperature with a separate thermometer

I've been baking for 15 years and always trusted the dial on my oven. Last week I picked up a $8 oven thermometer at the grocery store and stuck it inside. Turns out my oven runs 50 degrees hotter than what the dial says. All those burnt edges on my cookies and underdone centers on my cakes finally make sense now. Has anyone else tested their oven and gotten a big surprise?

Huh, I already have a thermometer on my smoker but never thought about my oven.

@rileyb61 I read some chef say oven thermometers prevent half your baking fails.
