I blew off my roommate's warning about our 'clean' dishes for 5 weeks and then I saw the sponge
My roommate kept saying the dishwasher in our Austin place was leaving a film on everything and I figured she was just picky. I used those pods with the little red ball and ran it on normal, same as always, for 5 straight weeks. Then one night I pulled the bottom rack out and there was this gray slime hanging off the spray arm. I took the filter out and it was packed with old food and grease, like a solid puck. I ran a hot cycle with a cup of vinegar and the difference was nuts, glasses came out squeaky. So yeah, the machine wasn't broken, I was just lazy about the filter. How often do you all actually pull that thing out?
The vinegar trick got me too, except my wake up call was a smell coming from the kitchen sink that I blamed on the garbage disposal for like two weeks. Pulled the filter on our dishwasher here in Round Rock and it had this layer of white film and old rice stuck to it, just nasty. I do it once a month now, first of the month so I don't forget, which is about 11 more times a year than before. My whole theory is that the filter is the one chore nobody tells you about when you move into a place with a dishwasher.
