The foam roller advice that wrecked my knee for 2 weeks
My trainer said to roll out the IT band hard every day, turns out that was bad advice for me. Did it for 5 days straight in Austin, now I can barely squat and my knee clicks. Anyone else get hurt following so-called expert tips?
The "roll it out hard every day" thing is such a perfect example of how we treat pain like it's just a knot to beat into submission. Same energy as people who think they need to scrub their face raw to get clear skin, or stretch a pulled muscle until it tears. More force is not always the fix, sometimes your body is telling you to back off and you're just not listening. Rolling your IT band is extra tricky because that thing is a thick band of tissue, you can't really stretch it out like a muscle, and pressing on it hard just irritates everything around your knee. Give it real rest and maybe see someone who actually looks at how you move instead of handing out one-size-fits-all homework.
