Vent: the $65 drip irrigation timer saved my tomatoes but nearly cost me my mind
Two summers ago I dropped $65 on a fancy battery powered drip irrigation timer from the hardware store in Fresno, and it was the best and worst money I ever spent on the veggie patch. The good part is my 6 tomato plants and 4 pepper plants stopped dying every time I forgot to water them, and I actually got a full crop of San Marzanos for the first time ever. The bad part is the thing ate through 4 AA batteries in 3 months because I had it set to run twice a day, and one morning the valve stuck open and flooded half my raised bed. I came out at 7am to see my beans floating like little green boats and I just stood there with my coffee going nope. I switched to a $12 mechanical timer with no screen and honestly it has run fine all season, though I do miss the fancy one when I go out of town. So now I keep the $65 timer in a drawer as a backup and I check the mechanical one every Sunday. What timer setups are you all running, and has anyone found one that actually survives a full summer without going haywire?
