Vent: raised beds vs ground soil, I picked wrong and my squash paid for it

After 3 summers of meh tomatoes in the ground, I switched to raised beds this spring and everything was going great until July. The soil mix I bought held water like a sponge, so my zucchini roots basically drowned in that 90 degree stretch. I dug up the whole bed in a panic, mixed in perlite and sand, but I lost over half my crop before I figured it out. Anyone else deal with drainage issues after switching to raised beds, or is it just me and my overwatering habit?
