Unpopular opinion: my neighbor's advice to plant tomatoes in June was the best gift he ever gave me
Two summers ago I was standing in my driveway in Fresno holding a flat of sad tomato starts in late May, and my neighbor Ray walked over and said, "you're a month early, put those in the ground in June and they'll catch up faster." I argued with him for ten minutes because every blog said May, but I tried it on half my bed anyway. By August his June plants were chest high and loaded, and my May ones had already stalled out in the heat. Now I wait every year and my harvest beats what the nursery tells me to do. Anyone else plant later than the seed packet says?
