Tried planting my tomato starts sideways in a trench, got a weird result and now I'm torn
Read somewhere that laying tomato seedlings sideways in a trench gets you a stronger root system, so I tried it on 6 plants in my raised bed back in April. The buried stems did throw roots, but 3 of them came up twisted and grew at a weird lean all season, and the fruit set was worse than my normal upright plants. So is it worth the extra hassle, or does the trench method just work better in sandy soil than my clay? Curious if anyone in zone 6 has made it pay off.
