The neighbor who swore by raised beds, now I see her point

My neighbor Carol in Boise spent last spring building 6 raised beds and I kept giving her grief about it, saying my in-ground rows were just as good. Last week she handed me a handful of her carrots and mine were about half the size, plus hers had zero rocks in the dirt. The real kicker was she said "it's not about the looks, it's about control" and now I'm wondering if I should rip up my plot and copy her. Anyone else switched from flat ground to raised beds after seeing a friend's results, or is this just a one-season fluke?

Funny you mention that, because I was exactly where you are about four years ago. My dirt here is so full of clay that even the weeds struggled, and every harvest felt like a fight. I finally built four raised beds just for my root vegetables and tomatoes, and the difference was night and day. The soil stays loose, it warms up earlier in the spring, and I can actually control how much compost I mix in without it washing away. Last summer my beets were double the size of anything I grew in the ground, and I hardly had to weed because I planted them so close together. I still keep a few in-ground rows for corn and squash, but for the finicky stuff, raised beds are the only way I go now.
