Neighbor told me I was planting my tomatoes too close together

Old guy two houses down walked over and said I was crowding them, so I spaced them out to 24 inches apart this season. Plants are way bushier and I'm getting twice the fruit so far - anyone else had to learn spacing the hard way?

My first garden looked like someone sneezed a packet of seeds into a single square foot... plants were so miserable they basically gave up mid-season.

Took me three seasons to finally listen to my neighbor who gardens like a pro. I used to cram them in so close you couldn't even walk between the rows without brushing leaves. Now I run them at least 30 inches apart and stake them up early, the air flow alone cuts down on blight like crazy. Funny how the old timers just know these things from years of doing it wrong themselves.
