My neighbor's blunt critique about my tomato spacing saved my whole patch

Last spring in Boise, my neighbor Bill watched me cram 8 tomato plants into a 4x8 bed and just shook his head. He said 'you're growing a jungle, not a garden' and told me to cut it down to 4 plants with 2 feet between each. I thought he was being fussy, but after I thinned them out, the air flow got better and I stopped losing half my crop to blight every August. Anyone else have a neighbor or family member give them a harsh truth that actually worked out?
