Just spent $45 on 'self-watering' tomato spikes that drowned my Early Girls in a week flat.

Has anyone else had a gadget totally backfire on them, or should I just stick to my old watering can?

Oh man, that's rough. My buddy bought one of those fancy indoor herb garden kits with the built in LED lights. Thing cooked his basil into a crisp in like three days. He said it looked like someone put it in a tiny oven. Sometimes the simple way is just better.

Tiny oven" is right. @joel_butler's buddy and your tomatoes got the same high-tech funeral. Maybe we should just use the gadgets to cook actual food.

Wait, LED lights actually cooked the basil? Honestly @joel_butler, that's wild. I figured those kits just gave the plants a sunburn, not a full on roast. Tbh turning fresh herbs into chips in three days is a new level of gadget failure.
