I finally looked up how long heirloom seeds actually stay viable
Found an old packet of my grandpa's 1998 tomato seeds in a drawer and figured they'd be toast. Turns out the Iowa State extension has a seed viability chart saying tomato seeds can last 6 to 10 years if stored cool and dry, so mine were way past that. But it got me wondering, what's the oldest seed anyone here has actually gotten to sprout? My neighbor swears she grew a bean from 1985.
