I dug 12 inch deep beds for 3 seasons until a guy in Tulsa told me to just dump it on top
Now I toss 4 inches of compost on the grass, let the worms do the digging, and my squash came in bigger than anything I ever got from a shovel, has anyone else made the switch or am I just fooling myself?
My neighbor Carl has been double digging his garden for 20 years and swears by it, but his soil is still hard clay six inches down. Meanwhile I stopped tilling about 5 years back, just layering leaves and grass clippings, and now I can push my hand straight into the dirt. Same thing happens with my wood pile, I quit splitting the small stuff and the rot does the work for me. We spend a lot of time fighting nature when it's already got the job handled.
