Ditched the tiller for a no-dig bed, now I'm second guessing everything
I used to rototill my whole veggie patch every spring, the whole 20 by 30 foot area, until last March when my lower back gave out after a wet clay season. My neighbor Ron, who grows monster tomatoes on the next street over, kept telling me to stop tilling and just layer cardboard, compost, and straw on top. I finally tried it on half my plot, and honestly the soil felt way fluffier by June, but my carrots still came out twisted and split. The tilled half gave me straighter roots but way more weeds, while the no-dig side had fewer weeds but slower early growth for my peppers. Now I'm torn between going full no-dig next season or sticking with a shallow fork-only method on the beds that need it. Anyone else switch methods after years of doing it one way, and how long did it take before you felt confident in the new way? Also, my soil is heavy clay with a pH around 6.2 if that matters.
