Am I the only one who got scolded at the Lebanon feed store for buying squash starts in June?
Last June I walked into the feed store in Lebanon with 6 zucchini starts in my cart when a guy near the seed rack looked at me and said "you're about 3 weeks late, pal." He explained that planting squash that late in our zone means the vine borers show up right when the fruit sets, and sure enough 4 of my 6 plants got hit within a month. I lost almost the whole crop while his early May planting two rows over was pumping out squash all summer. Now I start seeds indoors by mid April and I have not had a borer problem since. Has anyone found a late planting trick that actually works around here?
