Went with gravel under my $600 pergola footing instead of concrete, 4 inches deep
Had to pick between a concrete pad and a gravel base for the four posts on my 10x10 pergola out back in Tucson, and I went gravel because I can pull the posts up if I ever move the thing. Two rainstorms in and nothing has shifted, though one corner settled about a quarter inch so I packed more in by hand. Anyone run gravel long term and have it stay put, or am I going to regret skipping the pour?
Man, I did the same thing with my 12x12 three years ago and it has held up great. I dug down about 5 inches, tamped it in layers, and used 3/4 inch crushed rock. One post sank a bit the first summer after a big monsoon, so I just lifted the beam with a jack and shoved more gravel under it. Still dead level now and I love that I can move the whole thing if I ever want to. You made the right call.
