Built a raised patio on a slope in Boise with 14 bags of concrete and I will never do it again
Three weeks ago I finally tore out the sad gravel patch behind my house in Boise and poured a small raised patio on a slope that drops about 18 inches across 12 feet. I watched maybe 40 hours of videos and figured it was a weekend job. It was not a weekend job. Hauling 14 bags of concrete up a hill one at a time, digging out footings by hand because a machine could not reach back there, and fighting a string line that kept drifting every time my dog ran through it. My back still hurts and I spent $310 more than I planned. The part nobody warns you about is drainage. Water pooled against my house the first rain and I had to cut a channel in fresh concrete, which felt like carving up a cake I just baked. So here is my hot take, if your yard slopes more than a foot, just pay somebody. Anyone here built on a real slope and found a trick that does not involve a wheelbarrow and a prayer?
