Spent 4 hours in Desolation Wilderness chasing a trail that didn't exist on the map

I planned a loop near Echo Lake using the 2019 USGS topo, but the junction at Lake Aloha was completely overgrown and the side trail to Hemlock Lake just vanished. Ended up bushwhacking for 3 miles along the ridge before I found a faint use path that got me back to the PCT around 7 PM. Took 4 hours longer than my schedule, and my GPS battery died at 20%. Has anyone else found outdated maps in Desolation that were just plain wrong, or did I miss a recent reroute?
