Last June on the Superior Hiking Trail I watched a guy dump half his pack at a water stop, and it hit me that I had been hauling the same extra 12 pounds of "just in case" gear for a decade, so now I lay everything out, then pull out 5 items I can't name a real use for, and somehow still overpack the coffee.
