Got lost on the Pacific Crest Trail for 3 hours because I trusted my phone's GPS over a paper map
Near Mount Whitney last August, my phone died right when I hit a fork in the trail that looked nothing like the app showed. Now I always carry a real map and compass even if the route is 'easy' - has anyone else had a GPS fail at the worst possible time?

That's a common mistake with the Pacific Crest Trail, a lot of the Guthook app data is user-reported and outdated by the time you hit the trail. Paper maps from the PCTA are way more reliable for trail forks like that.

Man, I feel for you on that one @norab21. Getting turned around on a trail fork because of bad app data is the worst kind of frustration (especially when you're already tired and low on water). Hope the rest of your hike went smoother after switching to those maps.
