Master tech told me to stop using my scan tool, sparked a debate in me
Back in 2017 at a shop near Tulsa, an old master tech watched me chase a misfire for 45 minutes with my Autel. He finally said, "Put that thing down and look at the oil cap." The cap was full of mayo sludge, head gasket was shot. I would have found it in 3 minutes with basic checks. He argued that younger guys lean on electronics too much and lose the basics. But I've also seen old school guess-and-check waste customer money on parts. So where do you draw the line between using a scope and trusting your eyes first? Has anyone else had a senior tech put you in your place like that?
