Factory torque specs vs my gut on a rusty F150 hub, gut won and it cost me
Last month I was doing a front wheel bearing job on a 2012 F150 with 180k miles. The book said 295 ft-lbs for the spindle nut, but the threads were crusty and I figured I'd just send it at 250. Two days later the customer came back with a grinding noise. Had to redo the whole hub assembly, $280 in parts down the drain. Should I trust the book next time or is there a trick for rusty threads? Anyone else been burned by second guessing torque specs?
