That chat with a dark sky ranger made me hate my own photos

Talked to a ranger at the Cherry Springs site on Saturday and he pointed at my 2 minute tracked shot and said the Milky Way looked like a smudge, not a place. He walked me through his single 30 second exposure from 8 years ago and it had more depth than anything I have stacked in months. I mean, sure, gear helps, but I think I got too hooked on processing and forgot what natural light actually looks like. Anyone else ever had a stranger just casually wreck your whole editing workflow?
