I finally figured out why my star trails looked like garbage for 2 years
I was out at a dark site near Flagstaff last weekend and a guy next to me asked why my star trail shots had these weird little gaps in them. Turns out I had been using the built in interval timer set to 1 second between shots, which sounds tiny but leaves a gap in every trail when you stack them. He showed me how to set it to 0.5 seconds or just use a remote that fires continuously, and the difference in the final stack was night and day. I had been blaming my stacking software for two years and it was my own camera settings the whole time. Has anyone else run into this, and do you go with a remote or just live with the tiny gap?
Wrote off the 1 second interval for years as good enough, figured the gap was just something you dealt with unless you dropped real money on a fancy remote. Then a buddy lent me his cheap wired one and the trails came out solid as a rock, no missing chunks at all. Now I just fire continuously and let the camera buffer do its thing. Should have tried that fix a lot sooner instead of messing with my stacking settings for months.
