I finally drove out to the Joshua Tree dark sky zone and the Milky Way was so washed out from city glow on the horizon.

I could see the core, but a faint orange haze from Palm Springs to the west just killed the contrast, so has anyone found a truly dark spot in Southern California that's not a 6-hour drive?

Ugh, that's the worst. So the marina side is shot now too? How far east did you have to go to get away from that solar farm glow, like past the old campgrounds? I'm trying to picture exactly where that light dome ends.

The Salton Sea area still has decent darkness, just avoid the south shore.

Yeah the south shore is rough with all the new development. What about the east side near the old marina, is that still okay for stargazing? I tried going last fall and the skyglow from the new solar farm was pretty bad. Wondering if it's gotten worse or if there's a specific spot that's still dark enough to see the Milky Way.
