TIL my old way of storing potatoes was making them sprout faster

I used to keep my russet potatoes in a paper bag in the pantry, but they'd always get soft and sprouty within a week. Last month I read about storing them in a cool, dark place, so I tried a cardboard box in my basement, which stays around 55 degrees. They lasted almost a full month without a single sprout. Has anyone else tried a different storage spot that worked well?

Wait, your basement is 55 degrees? That's practically a walk-in fridge! Mine is so much warmer, no wonder my potatoes go bad so fast.

Honestly @carter.laura, what's your basement temp then?

My kitchen counter works fine for my potatoes, they sit right next to the bananas. I get maybe two weeks before they start looking rough, but that's plenty of time for me to use a five pound bag. A whole month is overkill unless you're running a restaurant. Who even has a 55 degree basement, that's wild.
