The $12 moisture meter from the hardware store saved my basement shelves, but not how I expected
I bought a cheap moisture meter before mounting shelves in my basement in Tacoma and it read 22% on the wall I was about to drill into, so I waited 6 weeks and it dropped to 11% on its own. Turns out my gutters were dumping water right at that corner and I never would have known without the meter. Anyone else found a cheap tool that told you something you really did not want to hear?
That cheap meter basically paid for itself before you even drilled a hole. Gutters dumping water into one corner is such a sneaky problem, and 22% down to 11% over six weeks is a huge drop that could've meant rotted framing later. Wish more people checked moisture before hanging anything in a basement.
