My kitchen sink drain was clogged for a full week before I got it

Tried a plunger, a cheap snake from the hardware store, and three different drain cleaners. Nothing worked. Finally borrowed a 25 foot auger from my buddy Greg and spent two hours last Saturday fighting with it. Turns out it was a solid mass of grease and coffee grounds about 15 feet down the pipe. Anyone have a better trick for keeping kitchen drains clear without chemicals?

Wait a second, you're saying you let all that crap go down the drain for a full week before you even tried to fix it? That's like asking for a clog. How much coffee you drinking that you've got a solid mass of grounds 15 feet down the pipe anyway? I mean, I get a little bit slipping past the strainer, but that sounds like you're dumping half a pot down there every morning.

That "solid mass of grease and coffee grounds" is the real problem. Do you use a sink strainer to catch the grounds, or does most of it go right down?

Sink strainers just push the problem down the line. They get clogged and you have to deal with a gross, slimy mess anyway. It's better to scrape plates into the trash first.
