Picked digital reconstruction over physical artifact handling, changed how I read site reports

I chose to spend 3 days in front of a monitor mapping sherds from that dig outside Santa Fe instead of holding the real pieces in the lab, and honestly the texture of the pottery still tells me more than any 3D model ever will, so has anyone else found the old-school method beats the fancy tech for getting a feel for a site?

Did your friend end up regretting that choice when they got the actual sherd back and realized the texture told a totally different story? Mine spent a week on 3D scans of a hearth, then actually touched the stones and found soot marks the model missed completely.
