Watching the silver maples on my block in Dayton come back after the 2022 storm pruning
I walk the same four blocks to the bus stop every morning, and three years ago the city hacked back the silver maples along Stewart Street so hard I figured they were done for. They cut them back to about 12 feet of stub, and the trunks looked like fence posts all that summer. This spring I finally noticed the difference: the crowns are back to nearly touching the wires, the bark has closed over most of the old cut wounds, and the leaf litter under them is thick again. I think the wet springs in 2023 and 2024 did most of the work, plus the fact that nobody touched them after the first cut. The one tree they pruned again last fall is the only one still looking rough. Has anyone else seen hard-cut maples bounce back that fast, or did my block just get lucky with the rain?
