My climbing line failed 30 feet up in an oak last Tuesday and I'm done trusting one safety check
I was doing a removal on a dead oak in a backyard off Willow Creek Rd last Tuesday, about 30 feet up, when my climbing line just popped. I had checked that line that morning with my hands and it felt fine, no fuzz, no flat spots, nothing that screamed retire me. Turns out the core was gone from the inside out and the sheath looked brand new, which my old boss in Phoenix always warned me about but I figured he was just being paranoid. I got lucky and caught a stub on the way down, only banged up my knee and my pride. Now I want to know how many of you are actually pulling your ropes and running them through your hands under load, or am I the only one who got lazy on this?
Had the same thing happen on a sycamore over on Decker Rd two winters back, sheath was mint but the core crumbled like dry rot when I finally cut it open. Now I run every line through my hands with weight on it before I leave the ground, no exceptions.
