Did the knife actually change how the cut went, or did you just finally have the right tool for once? I've used cheap knives on tough roots before and they work fine if you keep them sharp, so I'm not sold that the price tag is doing the work here. Maybe you just needed a real edge instead of that rusty trowel everyone starts with.
