I finally stopped using spikes on my climbing spurs for pruning jobs, but my old foreman in Tampa swears by them
He says spikes save you 10 minutes per tree and nobody ever checks, but I switched to a rope lanyard setup last month and my cuts have been way cleaner even though I'm slower, so which side are you on?
Your old foreman sounds like the kind of guy who also thinks seatbelts are optional because he's never crashed. Sure spikes save time, right up until someone files a complaint or you scar up a tree you're supposed to be caring for. I'd rather be slow and keep my job than fast and looking over my shoulder.
Used to roll my eyes at guys who ditched spikes, figured they were just slow and scared. Then I watched a crew butcher a row of oaks with spur wounds that never healed right, and it flipped my whole view on it. Speed doesn't mean much when the tree ends up looking like it lost a fight.
