PSA: I thought the "tap the compressor with a screwdriver handle" trick was total BS until a fridge in Boston proved me wrong
Had a Whirlpool side by side last month, no cooling, compressor humming but not kicking over. I'd heard the old timers talk about rapping the compressor with a screwdriver handle for years and always figured it was voodoo. Gave it two light taps on the side and the overload clicked, relay engaged, and the thing fired right up. Ran for 3 weeks before I went back and swapped the start relay anyway. $18 part, customer happy, and I felt like an idiot for doubting it. Anyone else got one of those old tricks you swore was nonsense until it saved your butt on a job?
Really, two taps and it fired right up? Could've just been a stuck relay that was gonna click over on its own anyway. Not saying the trick did nothing, but one fridge isn't exactly proof.
