My subbed vs dubbed argument got shut down by a 12 year old

I was in a Discord chat last Tuesday arguing that dub voice acting ruins the emotional weight of a scene, specifically for slower drama shows. I had like three paragraphs typed out about lip flap and script localization, feeling pretty confident. Then this kid, who I guess was in the server because of a cousin, just says "the dub made me cry harder" and linked the exact scene I was trashing. I sat there for a solid minute, rewatching it, and honestly? The delivery hit harder than the subbed version I always defend. It made me realize I've been gatekeeping how people enjoy anime for years without actually checking new dubs past episode one. Now I'm going through my old favorites with both versions side by side to see where I was wrong. Has anyone else had their whole stance flipped by a simple counter-example like that, or am I just stubborn?

Man, that hits close to home. I did the exact same thing for years, swore by subs and mocked anyone who touched a dub, then a buddy made me watch a scene from Fruits Basket dubbed and I was wrecked. It's like your brain builds this whole identity around being "the purist" and suddenly that identity cracks over one voice actor's delivery. Good on you for actually going back and checking instead of digging in deeper, that takes more guts than most people give you credit for.
