I read a story from an electrician once who found knob and tube still hot inside a wall after 80 years. The stuff never dies because nothing trips it, no ground, no breaker, it just sits there waiting. He said the insulation gets brittle and crumbles off, then any wire brushing past it is a coin flip. Running a new keypad line right next to a live splice means you just made that coin flip happen. Get the old circuit killed at the panel before you go back in there.
