Warning: My brother-in-law told me to stop using foil in the air fryer and I thought he was nuts

He was over for dinner last week in Milwaukee and saw me lining the basket with foil for some frozen fries. He just goes, 'You're basically blocking all the hot air, you know that right?' I mean, I always did it to keep things clean, and I never really had a problem. But he made me try a batch without it, and the difference was crazy. The fries came out way crispier all over, not just on top. I guess the foil was stopping the air from moving under the food. It made me realize I'd been using this thing wrong for like 2 years just to save 30 seconds of washing up. Has anyone else found a simple habit that was actually messing up their results?

My old roommate in Chicago did the same thing with parchment paper liners. It traps steam and makes everything a bit soggy underneath. I stopped using any liner and just give the basket a quick rinse right after.

Yeah that steam trap thing @reese124 mentioned makes total sense. So you just spray the basket clean while it's still hot and nothing sticks? I might have to try going liner-free.

Tried that once, made my chicken wings a soggy mess.
