TIL I was feeding my own writing into AI detectors and wondering why everything came back flagged
For about 4 months last fall I was using one of those AI checker sites on stuff I wrote myself, blog posts and some client work out of a shared office in Sacramento. Every single time I got hit with like 70 or 80 percent AI probability and I could not figure out why since I typed it all by hand. Then my buddy who does editing asked to see my draft and the first thing he pointed at was that I run every paragraph through ChatGPT to fix my commas and tighten things up before I paste it into the checker. I was basically laundering my own sentences through a model and then acting shocked when the detector smelled a model. Once I started leaving my clunky commas alone and only using AI for stuff like outlines and headline ideas, the same posts dropped to like 15 percent. It never occurred to me that the checker was just reading the leftovers of my own edits. Now I am curious if anyone else here has run into this where the tool you use to polish your writing is the thing getting you flagged, and what you do about it.
