Just read that AI data centers could use 6% of US electricity by 2026
I was looking into energy reports for a school project and came across something from the International Energy Agency. It said AI data centers might use up to 6% of all US electricity in just a couple years. That's nuts when you think about how much power that actually is, like whole states worth. I double checked the source and it was from their March 2024 report on electricity trends. What do you guys think, is that realistic or are they overblowing it? Has anyone else seen stats on this that point different ways?

That "whole states worth" part you said really stuck with me. It's like nobody stops to think how much electricity these things actually drink down. I've noticed this pattern where we keep adding more tech into our lives without asking what it costs behind the scenes. Like with crypto mining a few years back, same story just different machines. And now every company is racing to train bigger AI models. It just feels like we're stacking all this power demand on top of an already stressed grid while expecting everything to work fine. 6% sounds high but honestly it doesn't surprise me anymore, we just keep plugging stuff in and hoping for the best.

My buddy works at a data center out in Virginia and he told me they had to bring in portable generators just to keep the servers running during that heatwave last summer. The noise was apparently insane, like a constant roar 24/7. Meanwhile the neighbors were complaining about the sound but nobody cared because they wanted their Netflix to keep working. So you're right, we're just stacking stuff on top of other stuff and crossing our fingers. Reminds me of when everyone bought those electric scooters a few years back and suddenly the sidewalks were chaos. Same pattern, different flavor.
