I brewed 3 cups with tap water from Portland and they all tasted like pennies
I filled my kettle straight from the sink in my Portland apartment last Tuesday, and every cup came out with this weird metallic aftertaste I couldn't place until my neighbor asked if I had changed my water filter. Turns out the tap water here runs hard enough that it was pulling off flavors out of the beans the same way a bad filter would. Anyone else notice a specific taste change when they switched back to tap, or am I just overthinking my morning cup?
Portland water is actually pretty soft compared to a lot of places, so that penny taste probably isn't the water itself pulling stuff out of your beans. More likely your building has old galvanized pipes or you're getting some chlorine and mineral funk that a basic carbon filter would kill. People blame tap water all the time when the real issue is the roast date or the grinder. Try the same beans with bottled water and see if the taste actually goes away before you write off the tap.
