Senior CD told me my layouts were 'too nervous looking' and I switched from 8 column to 12 column grids last week

She said every element looked like it was fighting for space and my eyes didn't know where to land first. Has anyone else gotten a weirdly specific critique that actually fixed a blind spot you had?

That "fighting for space" comment really hits home. A buddy of mine in graphic design got told his posters looked like they were "screaming at the same time" and he realized he was trying to cram every idea into one piece instead of letting the main one breathe. He switched to a simpler layout with fewer elements and it made his work way clearer, no more visual shouting matches.

oh man @keithbutler that screaming analogy is perfect lol but yeah i had something similar happen a few years ago. my old art director told me my comps looked like they were "shaking" and i was like what the hell does that mean? turns out i was using too many conflicting angles and tiny spacing differences everywhere. it made everything feel jittery. i started matching baseline grids across all my elements and keeping a consistent margin rhythm. it was like the whole page stopped twitching and finally relaxed.
