My grandma's old flip phone rule made me rethink texting etiquette at 2 AM
I was up late chatting with my buddy Marcus, and he pointed out that I always reply instantly like it's a hot potato game. He said his grandma in Wichita still treats her phone like a landline, only answering during daylight hours unless it's an emergency. That hit me because I've been on call for work since 2018, and I forgot what it's like to just let a message sit. Does anyone else feel trapped by the expectation to respond fast, or am I just making my own cage?
Reminds me of my uncle Ray who refused to get a cell phone until 2019. He had this ancient answering machine that recorded messages on a tiny cassette tape, and he'd check it once a night after Jeopardy. Drove our whole family nuts because you could never reach him about anything urgent. Then when he finally got a phone he became the total opposite and would call me at 6 am just to talk about the weather. There's probably a happy medium in there somewhere between your buddy's grandma and my uncle.
