Update: Always skipped deburring by hand until my last engine rebuild.
A tiny burr caused a major leak, so now I take the extra minute to file everything smooth.

What changed your mind? I was in the same boat for a long time. Then I saw how often things go wrong without those extra steps. It's not overkill if it stops a big problem later. Saying it's too much is just a way to avoid doing the work. After you face real trouble, you never question it again.
