My DIY shelving project turned into a plumbing emergency
I skipped using a stud finder and drilled based on guesswork, hitting a water line. The resulting leak damaged drywall and flooring. Now, I always take the time to use proper detection tools before any installation. This simple precaution has saved me from repeat disasters.

Honestly, that sounds so stressful. I had a close call once where I nearly drilled into some wires because I got impatient, and just that moment of panic was enough to swear off guessing forever. @wrenbrown might say guessing works fine, but water damage is a whole different beast compared to a wobbly shelf. The cleanup and mold risk alone would keep me up at night. After seeing a friend's ceiling collapse from a slow leak, I'm firmly in the camp of never skipping the detector, no matter how small the job seems.

GUESSING often works FINE, skipping detectors saves time on minor jobs without issue.

Ouch, hitting a water line is one of those nightmare scenarios that makes you rethink every DIY decision. I skipped using a detector once on a simple picture hook and nicked a wire, which was scary enough. Water damage is on another level entirely, with the cleanup and repair costs adding up fast. Your point about always using proper tools now is spot on, it's the only way to avoid those expensive lessons. I've seen friends deal with similar leaks, and it always traces back to rushing or guessing. Taking those extra minutes with a stud finder or pipe detector really does pay off in the long run.
