Actually my friend kept pushing through shin splints because her training plan said so, and it just made everything worse. She finally took a break and came back way stronger after listening to her body. It's funny how we're taught to ignore pain signals to hit some made up goal. That kind of stubbornness just sets you back way more in the long run.

Yeah the training plan thing is so real. I mean I used to feel guilty for swapping a run for a walk or taking an extra rest day. Now if I feel a weird ache that isn't just normal soreness, I'll take like two or three days off completely. It always feels better to come back fresh than to force it and make a small thing into a big injury.

Oh man, I totally get this. I used to force myself to run five days a week no matter what. Now, like @claire_mitchell said, if I'm just worn out, I swap it for a long walk. I had a lot fewer little knee twinges when I started doing that, and my runs the next day always felt better.
