I used to hike past people without a word

I believed keeping to myself made hikes more peaceful. Then a woman walking her dog told me about a bear sighting up ahead. I turned back and avoided a risky situation. Now I see how sharing info on the trail keeps everyone safe.

On the Highland Trail last spring, a washed-out bridge warning was posted but the bridge was totally fine lol. We crossed it without any trouble.

Consider how quiet hikers might miss key clues. I once passed a group sitting totally still on a log, thought they were just resting. Turns out they'd frozen because a rattlesnake was right off the path. My quiet walk almost steered me into it. Makes you wonder how many close calls happen because we don't share the small details, right? A few words can turn a quiet trail from risky to safe.
