Overheard a driver at the Denver yard say 'the dock is a clock, and every minute you're late is a gear that stops turning'

It made me realize how a single delayed trailer at 8 AM can ripple into missed appointments and extra detention fees for three other loads by noon.

Ever wonder why the whole place feels like a house of cards by lunchtime? That one late trailer doesn't just mess up its own load, it kicks the legs out from under the whole day's plan. The domino effect is real, and the only thing falling faster than those dominoes is the planner's mood. Guess that dock clock is always set to panic time.

Yeah that "domino effect" idea is real, but honestly I've seen days where one late trailer just makes everyone else step up and we catch up by noon. Sometimes the panic is worse than the actual problem.

Read this article about how warehouses actually plan for delays, and it said the domino effect is only a sure thing if the system is already running too tight. A little slack built into the schedule can turn a late trailer into a speed bump, not a wreck. Makes you wonder if the real problem is the plan leaving no room for life to happen. Panic does spread faster than the actual delay most days.
